5 Biggest Challenges for RV Owners

Published on Jun 26, 2024 Blog Image

As a girl that grew up RVing and now RVs with my children, I know that  owning an RV opens up a world of adventure and creates unforgettable  memories with loved ones. However, this exciting lifestyle comes with its  own set of challenges. From the complexities of maintenance and repairs  to the nuances of finding suitable campsites, RV owners often face  hurdles that can test their patience and resourcefulness. Navigating the  intricacies of driving and parking a large vehicle, managing costs and  budgeting, and making the most of limited storage space are all part of  the journey. Let's delve into the five biggest challenges RV owners  encounter and explore practical solutions to overcome them.

1. Maintenance and Repairs

Many RVs stress, or even worse, neglect RV maintenance.  Both are mistakes.  RVs are complex vehicles with multiple systems that need regular upkeep. This can include the engine, brakes, tires, plumbing, electrical systems, and appliances.  But just because you need to be consistent with maintenance does not mean it needs to be hard.

Tips to Overcome:

  • Regular Inspections: Schedule regular maintenance checks with a trusted mechanic who specializes in RVs (hint – we are pretty awesome and we know a lot about maintenance). This can help identify and fix small issues before they become major problems.
  • Learn Basic Repairs: Familiarize yourself with basic repair skills and carry essential tools and spare parts. Online tutorials and RV owner forums can be valuable resources. Please just make sure you are fact checking and making sure your resources are reliable.  Some forums can be misleading or simply inaccurate
  • Create a Maintenance Schedule: Keep a log of maintenance tasks and set reminders for routine checks, such as oil changes, tire rotations, and roof inspections.
  • Enlist help:  If you are unsure about maintenance schedules or just not interested, we can take care of all the mundane tasks and paperwork.  To schedule a service appointment please click here

2. Finding Suitable Campsites

Have you ever dreamed up the perfect vacation and when you go to book your site you are left grappling with reality instead of your dream vacation?  You’re not alone!  The availability of campsites that can accommodate RVs varies, and peak travel times can lead to fully booked locations.

Tips to Overcome:

  • Advance Reservations: Book campsites well in advance, especially during popular travel seasons. Websites and apps like Campendium, RV Parky, and ReserveAmerica can help find and reserve sites.  You can also use state and national reservation sites like Recreation.gov and travelok.com.
  • Flexible Planning: Have a flexible itinerary with backup locations. This way, if your first choice is unavailable, you have alternatives ready.
  • Boondocking Skills: Learn about boondocking (camping without hookups) as an option. This provides more flexibility and the chance to camp in more remote, scenic locations.

3. Driving and Parking

Maneuvering a large RV can be challenging, particularly in unfamiliar areas or tight spaces.  We hear this challenge over and over again.  It is common to fear the unfamiliar.

Tips to Overcome:

  • Practice Driving: Spend time practicing driving and parking your RV in a safe, open area before hitting the road. This builds confidence and improves your handling skills.  If you would like a practice course Lewis RV Center provides training classes which consists of explaining various types of hitches and tow equipment, how to properly use them, and the opportunity to pull/ drive various styles of RVs.  *To learn more about our practice course and practical training please text PRACTICE to 4052321800.
  • Use Technology: Invest in tools like a GPS designed for RVs, which considers size and weight restrictions, and backup cameras to aid in parking.
  • Plan Routes: Research your routes in advance, paying attention to road conditions, bridge heights, and narrow passages. Use apps like RV Trip Wizard for route planning.  I personally like to use the Roadtrippers for my RV road trip adventures

4. Costs and Budgeting

The costs associated with RV ownership go beyond the purchase price. Fuel, maintenance, insurance, and campsite fees are all something you want to consider so that your camping experience is one of rest and relaxation, and not filled with number crunching.

Tips to Overcome:

  • Budget Planning: Create a detailed budget that includes all expected costs. Factor in unexpected expenses by setting aside a contingency fund.
  • Fuel Efficiency: Plan routes that minimize fuel consumption and drive at moderate speeds to improve fuel efficiency. Regular engine maintenance also helps.
  • Discount Programs: Join RV clubs or discount programs KOA Value Kard Rewards to save on campsite fees and other services.  **BONUS CONTENT** If you purchase your RV from Lewis RV Center you receive 10% off your stays at KOA campgrounds.*

5. Storage and Space Management

Efficient use of space is crucial in an RV. Overpacking or disorganization can lead to a cramped and uncomfortable living environment.

Tips to Overcome:

  • Declutter: Bring only the essentials and avoid overpacking. Regularly evaluate what you really need and remove items that are not in use.
  • Use Multi-functional Items: Invest in items that serve multiple purposes to save space. For example, a sofa bed or collapsible kitchen tools.  We have some great kitchen items that we use in our RV rentals.  If you would like information on these items, please email us rentals@lewisrvcenter.com
  • Organize Smartly: Utilize storage solutions like stackable bins, hanging organizers, and under-bed storage. Keep frequently used items easily accessible and store less-used items in harder-to-reach areas.
